Construction Law Legal Assistant – Litigation
Abbotsford, BC | Full-Time | $38–$43/Hour
A well-established law firm in Abbotsford, BC is seeking an experienced Legal Assistant to join its busy Litigation department, supporting lawyers on a range of Construction Law and Litigation matters.
This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented legal professional who is confident managing litigation files independently and enjoys working in a fast-paced legal environment.
The Opportunity
The successful candidate will provide comprehensive legal and administrative support to lawyers handling construction litigation matters. You will be responsible for managing files from start to finish, coordinating important deadlines and court matters, preparing legal documentation, and ensuring files progress efficiently with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage construction litigation files from opening through resolution.
- Organize and maintain electronic and physical files in accordance with firm procedures.
- Draft legal correspondence and other legal documents.
- Prepare and file pleadings, court applications, trial briefs, Notices of Civil Claim, and other litigation documents.
- Schedule trials, mediations, examinations, and other litigation-related appointments.
- Monitor limitation dates, bring-forward dates, court deadlines, and other critical dates.
- Move files forward proactively with minimal direction from lawyers.
- Review, organize, and summarize factual and supporting materials.
- Maintain lawyer and file calendars.
- Record time and maintain accurate billing information.
- Prepare monthly WIP reports and assist with client billing and invoicing.
- Manage incoming and outgoing correspondence, mail, and email.
- Create and maintain Construction Law precedents.
- Assist lawyers with general file management and administrative requirements.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of client and firm information.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
- Legal Administrative Assistant (LAA) certificate or equivalent education.
- 5+ years of legal assistant experience.
- 3+ years of litigation experience, preferably with exposure to Construction Law.
- Experience managing litigation files from start to finish.
- Strong knowledge of BC litigation procedures and court processes.
- Experience preparing and filing pleadings and court documents.
- Strong understanding of litigation deadlines and file management.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and proactively with minimal supervision.
- Professional, reliable, and highly organized.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with clients and legal professionals.
- High level of integrity and professionalism.
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
- Experience with Clio or other legal practice management software is an asset.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is an experienced Litigation Legal Assistant who is comfortable taking ownership of files and keeping matters moving forward.
You should be proactive, highly organized, detail-oriented, and confident working with lawyers, clients, opposing counsel, and other legal professionals.
Experience specifically supporting Construction Law litigation will be considered a strong asset.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary: $38–$43 per hour
